Television Digital Transition

|
Blueridge Public Television (BPT) covers all of western Virginia and portions of surrounding states. The network has three transmitter sites, WBRA, WMSY and WSBN, that start with the main Roanoke, Va. site and extend 140 miles to the west to the last transmitter site. BPT is running full power NTSC and will soon run full power DTV transmitters from all three sites.
A year and a half ago, Blueridge Public Television decided to make the leap into the digital world. The goal was to have an all-digital plant with a server/archive sufficient to handle both record and playback for 4 separate program streams with a total capacity of 5800 hours at 10Mbs. The Whitlock Group was chosen to complete the design and installation of this digital transition, providing cutting edge equipment and superior service and support.
Equipment in the project included a Seachange server, Pro-Bel master control switcher, Miranda Oxtel Imagestore with Easy sound audio options, Sundance automation system, Meyers ProTrac traffic system, an Avitech Virtual Monitor Wall System, four 50" Fujitsu plasmas, two Dalet audio workstations, Tektronix sync generators and automatic changeover units, Canare video and AVP audio patch panels, a Sony BVM-20F1U master monitor, Leader LV5100D WFM (used to monitor the SDI signals), audio monitoring by Wohler, and other equipment provided by Crown, JBL, Videotek and Leitch.
The Whitlock Group has succeeded in helping to make the Blueridge Public Television station a technologically advanced facility that will continue to meet the area's broadcast needs. This project also gives BPT the foundation on which to expand their digital facility to include production in the future.
