Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) selected The Whitlock Group to complete a state-of-the-art multimedia renovation in the school's historic, Egyptian-style Baruch auditorium. The Medical College of Virginia (MCV), a subsidiary of VCU, uses the Baruch auditorium to conduct medical classes for students in the MCV med-school program. Because the Baruch building is considered a historic landmark, the modifications were required to be structurally unobtrusive in every way.
The completed auditorium / classroom facility features an ultra-bright Proxima projector, motorized Da-Lite screen, Crestron Control system, THX Ultra surround sound system, Extron interfacing, an NEC 15" LCD monitor, a Sony DXC-990 camera, Crown amplifiers and Triad speakers.
To preserve the architectural integrity of the room, the speakers are all concealed behind Iron Grates around the room in decorative marble arches and the motorized screen is concealed in a marble bulkhead at the front of the auditorium. The projector and equipment all reside in a secured projection room at the rear of the auditorium.
The primary Crestron control panel is located in the podium at the front of the room and all controls are duplicated on a panel in the rear projection booth. The control booth is capable of monitoring an event for confidence or actually controlling the event from the booth with all of the functionality of the lectern. The Crestron control is enabled for e-Control so that the system can be remotely diagnosed in the event that an instructor or speaker is having problems with the system.
The system is capable of displaying a dedicated PC, laptop, DVD, VCR or document camera. It features playback and recording capabilities for audio so that a lecture can be recorded or prior recordings can be played back. The room also has an assisted listening system for people with hearing disabilities and has been outfitted for the addition of video and audio conferencing for distance learning.
