The Whitlock Group's Digital Transition Team (DTT) recently completed the design, engineering and integration of a new ITU-BT R.601 16:9 format broadcast facility for WUSF-TV in Tampa, Florida. Situated on the campus of the University of South Florida, WUSF-TV is a state-of-the-art digital production and broadcast center capable of four channel multicasting and complete production services.
For over 35 years, the basement of the University of South Florida's (USF) original library had been the home to WUSF-TV, Channel 16. On the air 24-hours a day in a top 20 media market, the station outgrew its original facility and the decision was made to build a new facility next to its sister station - WUSF-FM. The new facility includes two large studios and powerful digital production facilities. The Whitlock Group was chosen as the systems integrator to complete the total systems design and integration of the new facility's main terminal room, master control, production control, VTR and feed area, audio booth, graphics room, and two studios.
Reflecting its support of the quickly expanding role of networked digital video in broadcast television operations, The Whitlock Group collaborated with Ampex Data Systems, SeaChange International Inc. and Avalon Consulting Group to provide the networked video server archive management solution for WUSF's broadcast enterprise. Uniting the industry-leading video server system, archive and management software, the solution enables optimal performance of high bit-rate digital video from long-term storage to playback on-air.
The Whitlock Group completed the integration of the fully automated system in March of 2001. By engineering a facility to meet the immediate needs of the station with plenty of room for future multicasting and datacasting upgrades, The Whitlock Group provided WUSF-TV with a "no compromise" facility that maximized performance of the station's expanding technologies and broadcast offerings.
